　黙示［もくし、Ἀποκάλυψις 、apocalypsis（əpάkəlìps）、"lifting of the veil" or "revelation"］とは、初期のユダヤ教およびキリスト教において、神が選ばれた預言者に与えたとする「秘密の暴露」、またそれを記録したものと解説されています

　1：1 This is the Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things which must happen soon, which he sent and made known by his angel to his servant, John,

　第1章第1節
　これイエス・キリストの默示（もくし）なり。即ち速（すみや）かに起るべき事を、その僕（しもべ）どもに顯（あらは）させんとて、神の彼に與（あた）へしものなるを、彼その使（つかひ）を僕（しもべ）ヨハネに遣（つかは）して示し給へるなり。

　有名な『ヨハネの黙示録』は、古代キリスト教の小アジアにおける七つの主要な教会にあてられる書簡という形をとっています。

　1：4 John, to the seven assemblies that are in Asia:

　ヨハネ書（ふみ）をアジアに在る七つの教會に贈る。

　おお、なんとかっこいい台詞（せりふ）であることか！

　昔、五木寛之氏の『蒼ざめた馬を見よ』という小説が一世を風靡したことがありましたが、この『ヨハネの黙示録』は、さまざまな形で人々の精神形成に影響を与えたようです。

　新約聖書の最後に登場する預言書『ヨハネの黙示録』は、96年頃、パトモス島のヨハネによって書かれたと考えられてきました。
パトモス島 (Patmos, Πάτμος) は、エーゲ海に浮かぶギリシャの小島で、『ヨハネの黙示録』の著者とされる使徒ヨハネが、イエス・キリストから啓示を受けたとされる島として知られています。

　ローマ帝国はこの島を流刑地として用い、95年には使徒ヨハネが第11代皇帝ドミティアヌス帝（在位81～96）によってこの島に流されたとされています。

　「黙示録」はその難解な表現のために長い間排斥され、中世末期には正教会（ギリシャ正教もしくは東方正教会）でも正典に加えられはしましたが、聖書の中で唯一正教会における奉事・祈りで朗読されることのない書となっているそうです。

　さて、黙示録の四騎士は、それぞれ伝統的に、疫病、戦争、飢饉、死（Pestilence、 War、 Famine、and Death）を表しています。

　The "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" is a term used to describe four horsemen that appear in the Christian Bible in chapter six of the Book of Revelation.The verses traditionally describe the four horsemen as Pestilence, War, Famine, and Death.

　1. White horse　　Pestilence（疫病）　　Carries a bow　弓を持つ
　　　Is given a Crown, goes forth conquering.
　　　冠を戴き、勝利の上の勝利（支配）を得る役目を担っている

　2. Red　horse　　War（戦争）　　　　　　　Carries a sword　剣を持つ
　　　To take peace from the earth, and let men kill one another.
　　　地上から平和を奪い、人間に戦争を起こさせる役目を担っている

　3. Black horse 　　Famine（飢饉）　　　　Carries a balance　秤を持つ
　　　To bring famine.
　　　地上に飢饉をもたらす役目を担っている

　4. Pale horse　　Death（死）　　　　　　　　Followed by　Hades　陰府（よみ）を従える　
　　　Over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

　6:1 I saw that the Lamb opened one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures saying, as with a voice of thunder, "Come and see!"

　第6章第1節
　羔羊（こひつじ）その七つの封印の一つを解き給ひし時、われ見しに、四つの活物（いきもの）の一つが雷霆（いかづち）のごとき聲（こゑ）して『來（きた）れ』と言ふを聞けり。

　6:2 And behold, a white horse, and he who sat on it had a bow. A crown was given to him, and he came forth conquering, and to conquer.

　また見しに、視よ、白き馬あり、之に乘るもの弓を持ち、かつ冠冕（かんむり）を與（あた）へられ、勝ちて復勝たんとて出でゆけり。

　6:3 When he opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, "Come!"

　第二の封印を解き給ひたれば、第二の活物（いきもの）の『來（きた）れ』と言ふを聞けり。

　6:4 Another came forth, a red horse. To him who sat on it was given power to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another. There was given to him a great sword.

　かくて赤き馬いで來（きた）り、これに乘るもの地より平和を奪ひ取ることと、人をして互に殺さしむる事とを許され、また大（おほい）なる劍（つるぎ）を與（あた）へられたり。

　6:5 When he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature saying, "Come and see!" And behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a balance in his hand.

　第三の封印を解き給ひたれば、第三の活物（いきもの）の『來（きた）れ』と言ふを聞けり。われ見しに、視よ、黒き馬あり、之に乘るもの手に權衝（はかり）を持てり。

　6:6 I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, "A choenix of wheat for a denarius, and three choenix of barley for a denarius! Don't damage the oil and the wine!"

　かくてわれ四つの活物（いきもの）の間（あひだ）より出づるごとき聲（こゑ）を聞けり。曰く『小麥（こむぎ）五合は一デナリ、大麥（おほむぎ）一升五合は一デナリなり、油と葡萄酒を害（そこな）ふな』

　6:7 When he opened the fourth seal, I heard the fourth living creature saying, "Come and see!"

　第四の封印を解き給ひたれば、第四の活物（いきもの）の『來（きた）れ』と言ふを聞けり。

　6:8 And behold, a pale horse, and he who sat on it, his name was Death. Hades followed with him. Authority over one fourth of the earth, to kill with the sword, with famine, with death, and by the wild animals of the earth was given to him.

　6：9　When he opened the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been killed for the Word of God, and for the testimony of the Lamb which they had.

　第五の封印を解き給ひたれば、曾（かつ）て神の言（ことば）のため、又その立てし證（あかし）のために殺されし者の靈魂（たましひ）の祭壇の下に在るを見たり。

　6：10　They cried with a loud voice, saying, "How long, Master, the holy and true, until you judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?"

　彼ら大聲（おほごゑ）に呼（よば）はりて言ふ、『聖にして眞（まこと）なる主よ、何時（いつ）まで審（さば）かずして地に住む者に我らの血の復讐（ふくしう）をなし給はぬか』

　6：11　A long white robe was given to each of them. They were told that they should rest yet for a while, until their fellow servants and their brothers, who would also be killed even as they were, should complete their course.

　6：12　I saw when he opened the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake. The sun became black as sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon became as blood.

　6：13　The stars of the sky fell to the earth, like a fig tree dropping its unripe figs when it is shaken by a great wind.

　天の星は無花果（いちぢく）の樹の大風に揺られて、生（な）り後（おくれ）の果（み）の落つるごとく地におち、

　6：14　The sky was removed like a scroll when it is rolled up. Every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

　天は卷物を卷くごとく去りゆき、山と島とは悉（ことご）とくその處（ところ）を移されたり。

　6：15　The kings of the earth, the princes, the commanding officers, the rich, the strong, and every slave and free person, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains.

　地の王たち・大臣・將校・富める者・強き者・奴隷・自主の人、みな洞（ほら）と山の巖間（いはま）とに匿（かく）れ、

　6：16　They told the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb,
