歳時記（20）−夏（7）− canicular days

ご無沙汰しとりますねんなあ！
梅雨明けの暑さときたらかつてないひどさで、「今年の夏はいったいどないなってしまうねん?!」と不安に思っているのは、私「嘉穂のフーケモン」だけではありますまい。
筑紫の国に住していたはるか昔も、クーラーのない暑さの中で喘いではいましたが、朝夕は若干涼しくて、お勉強は涼しい朝のうちに頑張っていたものでしたがねえ！

By thinking on the frosty Caucasus?
Or cloy the hungry edge of appetite
By bare imagination of a feast?
Or wallow naked in December snow
By thinking on fantastic summer’s heat?

あゝ、どんなにコーカサスの雪の山を思ひつゞけて見たからって、
火を手掴みにすることは出來ますまい。
山海の珍味に満腹したと想像したゞけで、

‘fantastic’という言葉は英英辞書によれば、‘imaginary’あるいは‘strange and showing a lot of imagination’（Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary）と記述されており、元来「想像の世界のみに存在する」という意味だそうで、したがって‘fantastic summer’s heat’とは、「現実には到底ありえないほどの猛暑、ひどい夏の暑さ」を意味し、季語で云えば「炎暑」「炎熱」「炎天」となるのでしょうか。 続きを読む
